so what versions are actually available? (like, there's that paper
about the verifying compiler for the vlisp flavour, but i failed to
find actual code i could use myself.) is it pretty much only what
ships with Scheme-48?

That's pretty much the only one that's available.

The Wikipedia page confuses me. I don't know what "Macro-Free
PreScheme" or "Pure PreScheme" are: The PreScheme compiler macro-expands
the source into an intermediate representation, which is then compiled
to the CPS representation, neither of which is PreScheme anymore.
