Build fixes for FreeBSD

I still need to ‘export MAKE=gmake’ before running autogen.sh, but at
least now autogen.sh can be made to work at all.

I still need to ‘export MAKE=gmake’ before running autogen.sh, but at
least now autogen.sh can be made to work at all.

Taylor R Campbell informed me that S48's makefile is compatible with
BSD make. See attached for more patches to autogen.sh; now I don't
need to set an environment variable at all (but I'm leaving that in so
it'll be easier to test autogen.sh with different make implementations
in the future).
